New Richmond Bridge and Traffic Improvements - Stage 2

Stage 2 comprises: 

  •  a new four-lane bridge over the Hawkesbury River

  • road widening improvements through North Richmond

  • intersection improvements

  • new bypass south of Richmond town centre, and

  • improved pedestrian and bicycle user connections.  

Stage Two was previously split into Stage 2A and Stage 2B, with the latter contingent on further funding. Funding has now been made available for the delivery of Stage Two in full.

PROJECT HISTORY

Jul 2024 Transport for NSW updated its Transport Infrastructure Projects Pipeline 2028, confirming a number of key dates for the project. Award of Stage Two was pushed back to Q4 2026, with construction commencing Q1 2027 and reaching completion Q4 2028.
Dec 2024 The NSW Government called for Expressions of Interest for the delivery of Stage Two of the project, closing on 20 February 2025.
Dec 2024 Transport for New South Wales indicated that additional funding would be required to deliver all aspects of the project, and subsequently split stage two into stages 2A and 2B to prioritise delivery of key project features within the available funding envelope. Stage 2B, which includes delivery of additional intersection upgrades and a bypass on Southee Road, is contingent on additional funding.
Feb 2025 Review of Environmental Factors (REF) submissions closed.
Jul 2025 Infrastructure NSW released an updated timeline for the project in its 2025 Major Projects Pipeline. Construction is expected to commence Q3 2026 and reach completion Q2 2029.
Aug 2025 Transport for NSW announced at its InMotion 2025 conference that the Request for Tender for the project's Design and Construct contract is expected to be released in Q3 2025.
Oct 2025 Transport for NSW issued a Request for Tender for professional services for the project . The scope of work includes the provision of Maritime Archaeological Research, Design and Excavation Methodology assessment and salvage works.
May 2026 Transport for NSW (TfNSW) has awarded Fulton Hogan a contract to deliver Stage Two of the project under a Design and Construct contract. Stage Two of the project was previously split into two sub-stages (2A and 2B), which have been combined into a single contract.
