State Highway 6  - Hope Bypass Road

The project comprises a staged upgrade of State Highway 6 at Hope in the Nelson–Tasman region, including corridor improvements between the Lower Queen Street/Gladstone Road intersection and the SH6/Link Road roundabout.

The project is expected to be delivered across two stages.

Stage One:

  • a new grade separated interchange on SH6 at Salisbury Road Extension (local road over)  
  • upgrading the Richmond Deviation from two-lanes to four lanes  
  • widening Lower Queen Street and Gladstone Road, and
  • signalising the intersection of Lower Queen Street and Stratford Street .

Stage Two:

  • new four-lane grade separated interchange at Lower Queen Street  
  • a four-lane Richmond bypass, and
  • new two-lane roundabout at SH60 intersection.

PROJECT HISTORY

Oct 2025 The NZ Government announced $1.2 billion in funding through the Roads of National Significance programme.
Nov 2025 NZTA released a major project report, detailing the proposed scope, total estimated cost and timeline for the project.
Feb 2026 NZTA awarded Stantec and WSP the design contract for the project, with assessments expected to commence in March 2026, with detailed design scheduled to be completed by mid-2027.
